Taraba ‘kidnap kingpin’ rose from ‘fish seller to multimillionaire’

By Daily Hint  14/8/2019

Hamisu Wadume, suspected kidnap kingpin in Taraba, was a poor fish seller until he took to kidnapping, according to The Sun.

The young man was reportedly trading in both fresh and dried fish in Wukari, Taraba, up till last year when he went into kidnapping where he was said to have made millions.

Wadume was said to have started kidnapping with six AK-47 riffles and 3,000, rounds of ammunition.

The suspect was arrested by the intelligence response team (IRT) of the inspector-general of police but escaped when soldiers opened fire on the team.

Three policemen and a civilian were shot dead in the incident.

Gbenga Adebowale identified as one of the arms supplier of Wadume has been arrested by the police.

He said he met Wadume through one of his clients in Onitsha, Anambra state.

The Sun quoted Adebowale as saying he never knew Wadume was into kidnapping, adding that he is not in position to ask his customers what they wanted to use the weapons for.

“I got to know him through one Moses. You know the firearm business involves a lot of people; it is not a one-man business; it’s a cartel and we have bases and we are based in different places like Lagos, Ibadan and Onitsha,” Adebowale reportedly said.

“So, I got to know Hamisu through one Moses from Onitsha. Hamisu is a friend to Doshima and Dillili and they usually come from Makurdi, to see Moses who is my partner in firearms business; that was how I met him. There was a time I traveled to do supply in Onitsha; that was the first time I met them and that was about four years ago.

“They came together to Onitsha. He wasn’t my customer, so I didn’t have much dealings with him; I only chatted with him because my business is a mafia kind of business; so I’m careful with the kind of people I deal with. Besides, I didn’t want my partner to think that I wanted to steal his customers from him, so I decided to stay away from them.

“I think he asked for ten AK47 rifles, and I didn’t have that number at the time in my possession. But since he said he was in desperate need of them, I told him I had only six and four cans because he requested for ten. The ammunition is called can. The box of the ammunition is called can. So I said I could only provide six AK-47 and four cans that is the box of the ammunition. That was late January this year.

“Well, since he was in desperate need of the weapons, the AK was supposed to be N650,000, but I sold them to him for N800,000. Then the ammunition I gave to him at the rate of N350,000.”

Adebowale said he smuggles the arms from neighbouring countries and supplies them to his clients across the country, well-concealed in a vehicle designed for the consignments.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called in the federal government not to take Nigerians for granted as they protest the recent hike in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) popularity known as petrol and electricity tariff.

The NANs in a protests led by the zonal Coordinator of NANS Zone “C” Comrade Suleiman Muhammad Sarki in Maiduguri on Monday were at the NUJ Press Centre, holding placards with several inscriptions such as, ‘Government should not be sadistic and thinks less of its citizens”, The dead is dying again, ” Increase of fuel price is too daring,”among others and singing all kind of solidarity songs against what they described the hike as the highly erroneous action of government against citizens at the time the world is recovering from COVID 19.

Comrade Sarki said ” We call on government to stop pushing Nigerians to wall. This is too daring; stop killing the dead. The country and indeed the whole world are facing serious problem right now due to covid19 pandemic, such mistaken decision is just as adding salt to injury.”

“Instead of dealing with insecurity, we are taking actions that will further heighten insecurity. The hike in petrol pump price will lead to hikes in price of goods and services.”, The NANS added.

The Association therefore condemn the increase in petrol price and electricity tarrif by federal government and call for the immediate reversal.

” We are not out of COVID 19, a lot of citizens are loosing their jobs, people are getting poorer and more responsibility, school closure, young people are roaming the streets unemployed, therefore fuel hike at this time is shocking”, the NANs further stressed

Comrade Sarki said Nigerians have gave this administration under President Bihari so many excuses than any other government in the history of Nigeria and therefore, called on the Federal government not to take Nigerians for granted.
