FEE INCREMENT, PLEASE RESCUE US, UNIMAID STUDENTS BEGGED FG

By Madu Mohammed, Maiduguri

The students of the university of Maiduguri under the umbrella of the National Association of Nigerian Students (,NANS) Zone C has urged the Federal Government and the University of Maiduguri Governing Council to reverse it decision on the increments of school fess on the students of the University, as 90 percent of the students are from poor background and are internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Northeast.

Addressing a World press Conference at the NUJ Press centre Maiduguri on Tuesday, the Zonal Coordinator, Zone C of the NANS. Comrade Suleiman Sarki said ” the recent fees increment by the University of Maiduguri does not only came to us as a surprise but as as an afontt to the war agsinst insurgency in the Northeast, such that students who are unable to pay the new fees might end up becoming a drop out and thus will add to the rising number of youth restiveness in the country”.

” You will agree with me that Education is important for personal, social and ecinomu development of the nation. Education empowers minds to conciueve good thoughts and ideas. We are calling on the the Feeders government and the University governing council not to deny us this important opportunity to be educated,” Comrade Sarki appealed.

He further said ” the ABU, BUK, and University of Abuja MBBS students are paying N45,0000 which is far below what students of UNMAUD Medical students will pay in the new increment which N129,900.. We therefore call on the governing council of the University to deduce down below 2918/2918 session in the 3028/2920 session considering our siruaitions as IDPs.”

He said 45 percent of UNIMAID students are Botno indigens, while other 45ercent are from other Northeast states ravage by insurgency, adding that denying these students access to education will impede the progress of the ongoing peace building process in the region..

” We therefore seek the support of the entire Nigerians and the world to help us talk to the Federal government call on the University if Maiduguri governing council to reverse their decision, ” the Coordinator said.

He said ” No doubt this singular decision of the University to increase the fee will produce frasturated drop outs and more illiterates on the streets, which might lead to unwanted security cgskkrbges.”

He therefore called on the Federal Government and the International community to know that their situation is more than that Chibokgirls and prayed that they iunderstand that they are self supported IDPs and intrrven.
