Borno NUJ Calls On State Government, UMTH To Tackle Power Outage in Public Hospitals

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Borno state Council has observed with dismay the frequent power outages at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) and other health institutions that a serous threat to lives of patient, and untold hardship on health workers, patients and relations and called on the state government and the UMTH to address the challenges. .
The NUJ in a 13 point communique issued at the end of Congress meeting held at the NUJ press Centre, Maiduguri
and read by the communique committee, Chairman, Mr. Inusa Ndahi on Saturday called on the government and the management of the UMTH and that of the Yola Electricity Distribution Company to take action to address these life-threatening challenges.
The Congress led by the Chairman,, Comrade Dauda Iliya, skso raised serious concern about Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who have resorted to begging on the streets; calling on the State Government to provide proper care for their needs.
The Chairman expressed appreciation to all members for their support and cooperation in adhering strictly to the constitutional procedure for registering new members into the Union and also emphasized the Union’s zero-tolerance policy towards non-payment of Check-up dues.
The Chairman who unveiled several training and capacity building programs which members have already benefited from, promised that more of such programs are coming in the future but however, warned members on payment of check- Up Dues, refusal to attend Union activities, as anybody who violated the above would not benefit from the union gestures.
The Congress also expressed concern over the environmental issues arising from blocked drainages, leading to erosion and degradation; thereby called on the government to take appropriate measures to address this problem.
The communique said ” Congress has also expressed concern about the high rate of criminal activities among youths, such as increasing cases of rape and other forms of sexual violence. They are calling on the security agencies, government, parents, and guardians to fulfill their responsibilities in addressing this issue.”
The Union also agreed to a letter to Head of Service Borno State to ensure NUJ members on the payroll of the state government, who were neglected from their civic rights. are recognized as a professional body.
The Congress Appreciated Borno State Government, UNIMAID, and other Organizations/ ministries for appointing some members of the UNION, for example our Chairman, Comrade Dauda Iliya, and host of others as member (s) of various Committees in the state”, the communique said.
