As President Asks For 7 Days For Major Decision on Currency Redesign
Governor Mai Mala Buni CON, and other APC Governors met with the President Muhammadu Buhari, as he urged Nigerians to give him 7 days to resolve the cash crunch that has become a problem across the country following the policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The president’s spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina, in a statement, said Buhari stated this during a meeting with the Progressive Governors Forum on Friday at the State House.
Governor Mai Mala Buni and other APC governors were in the Presidential Villa to seek solutions to the cash crunch which they said was threatening the good records of the administration in transforming the economy.
The governors told the president that, while they agreed that his decision on the renewal of currency was good and they are fully in support, its execution had been botched and their constituents were becoming increasingly upset.
They told the president that as leaders of the government and party in their different states, they were becoming anxious about a slump in the economy and the series of elections that are coming.
They requested the president to use his powers to direct the concurrent flourish of the new and old notes till the end of the year.
The President told the governors that being closer to the people, he had heard their cries and would act in a way that there will be solution to the problems, Buhari assured Nigerians.
Recall, Governor Buni made a special request to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to give a special concession and alternatives to the people of the state against the dateline for change of Naira notes.
Governor Buni said the appeal became necessary due to lack of banking services in most parts of the state.
He explained that only four out of the 17 local government areas in the state have banks, making it difficult for people in the remaining 13 local government areas to access banking services.
Governor Buni appealed to the CBN to provide special services to such areas with special needs to avoid making them victims and loosing their money.
